The Nuance

AI enlarging tools such as Adobe Super Resolution and Topaz Photo AI immediately breach the rules, because they generate new information. Denoise and automatic level, colour and contrast adjustments remain permitted. The line is not whether a tool used AI.

The Receipt

Entrants must provide files as recorded by the camera for every image reaching the final stages, examined confidentially between 26 January and 22 February 2026. Failure to provide them excludes the entry.

Questions before you start

Is this really free?
Yes. Zekai is an independent AI tools directory — the challenge is how we introduce people to the tools we test. Some tool pages contain affiliate links; the challenge itself costs nothing and requires no purchase.
Will this teach me to generate images?
No. Not one drill in this challenge asks a model to make a picture. The whole month is about the work around the shutter: turning a vague request into a brief you can shoot, planning a day around light and access, culling faster without letting a machine choose, writing captions that are factually true, keywording an archive so you can find anything, and pricing by usage rather than by feel. The shooting stays yours.
What is the capture rule?
Installed on day 6: nothing may be added to or removed from what the camera captured. World Press Photo states it in its own rules — AI-generated images are not photography, a photograph captures light on a sensor or film and is a record of a physical moment. Every entry must be made with a camera, and no generative fill is allowed in post-production. The useful part is the nuance: those same rules permit denoise and automatic adjustments to levels, colour and contrast, provided they do not add or remove information. The line is not whether a tool used AI.
So I cannot use AI tools at all?
The opposite. Several drills are built on tools that use AI heavily and are entirely legitimate: culling on day 4, editing consistency on day 8, retouching on day 9, keywording on day 14. What matters is what the tool does to captured information. Denoise renders what was recorded; an AI enlarger generates detail that was never there. World Press Photo names Adobe Super Resolution and Topaz Photo AI as immediately breaching its rules for exactly that reason, while permitting denoise and automatic adjustments. Day 10 has you audit your own toolkit against that distinction.
I shoot weddings, not news. Do these rules apply to me?
Contest and newsroom rules do not bind a wedding photographer, and this challenge does not pretend they do. Day 6 has you sort your own work into categories and decide the line for each, because retouching a blemish for a portrait client and removing a person from a news frame are not the same act. What does apply to every photographer is the commercial half: what your model release actually covers now that generative tools exist (day 13), what your client contract says about AI (day 23), and what happens to images you upload to a tool you have not vetted (day 26).
Why can’t I see all 30 drills at once?
Because binge-reading builds nothing. The challenge unlocks one drill per day from the day you sign — the way any skill gets built: daily reps. Day 1 is open right now so you can try it before committing.
Do I need any AI experience?
Zero. Day 1 assumes you have never written a deliberate prompt. By day 14 you will have a keyword structure that makes your own archive searchable.
What if I miss a day?
Life happens, and so does an unplanned stop. The challenge is sequential, not strict-daily. Pick up where you left off; the certificate cares that you finish all 30, not that you were perfect.
