An abstract forces a hierarchy: one claim, the evidence for it, why it matters. Everything else has to go, and deciding what goes is the thinking.
Why this matters: Abstract writing transfers further than any other academic skill — into applications, into interviews, into the answer to "so what is your dissertation about?" Practise it on work you already know well.
