Lesson 4: Quantity first, judgement second.

Ask for one idea and you get the safest one — usually "run a survey" or "review compensation". Ask for twelve and the useful ones appear in the middle, once the obvious is exhausted.

Why this matters: People problems get solved with whatever intervention is nearest to hand. Generating a wide field first, then choosing, is how you avoid running the same engagement survey for the fourth year running.
