How VCs & Investors Actually Use AI: 2 Real Workflows (2026)

The short answer

In 2026, investors use AI in two distinct ways. Venture capitalists use specialized platforms like Harmonic and Affinity for deal sourcing and diligence, plus LLMs for memo drafting. A 2026 survey from Investing.com found 62% of retail investors use AI, primarily general-purpose tools like ChatGPT for stock research and summarizing financial reports.

Investors are past asking *if* they should use AI. The question now is *how*. Competitors offer high-level statistics or paywalled interviews, but they don’t show the actual, day-to-day work. This is the guide we wanted when we started our own AI Challenge.

This article details the two real AI-driven workflows happening today: one for institutional venture capital (VC) and private equity (PE) investors, and another for individual investors managing public-market portfolios. We’ll outline the exact steps and tools used each day of the week, based on our independent research and testing at ZEKAI. We are an independent AI tools directory and our reviews are our own.

For a complete overview of AI’s impact on this profession, see our main AI for Investment & Venture Capital hub.

The Two Worlds of AI in Investing

“Investor” is too broad a term. How a VC associate uses AI to find the next unicorn has almost nothing in common with how a retail investor uses it to analyze a 10-K. Most guides conflate the two; we separate them because the jobs-to-be-done are fundamentally different.

The rest of this guide breaks down a realistic weekly workflow for an investor in each world.

Workflow 1: A Week in the Life of a VC Associate

This workflow focuses on an associate at a mid-sized venture fund. Their goal is to source new deals that fit the fund’s thesis, perform initial diligence, and help manage the existing portfolio. Their AI stack replaces hours of manual research with automated signal detection and analysis.

Monday: Thesis-Driven Sourcing The week begins by turning the fund’s investment thesis into a set of queries. Instead of manually scraping LinkedIn, news sites, and conference lists, the associate uses a deal sourcing platform.

They configure their platform to track signals that predict a startup is gaining traction *before* it announces a fundraise. These include:

Using a tool like Harmonic or Grata, they build a dynamic list of companies that match these criteria. This shifts sourcing from a manual, outbound effort to an automated, inbound flow of qualified leads.

Prompt 01 Data Room Diligence Prompt
You are a VC analyst. I have uploaded a startup's data room, which includes their financial model, cap table, and three sample customer contracts. Review these documents and answer the following, citing the source document for each claim:
1. What is the current monthly recurring revenue (MRR) and its month-over-month growth rate for the last 6 months?
2. Who are the largest holders on the cap table besides the founders? Are there any non-standard terms or liquidation preferences?
3. Summarize the key terms of the customer contracts. What is the average contract value (ACV) and contract length? Are there any unusual termination clauses?

They combine this with market data from a platform like PitchBook to validate the company’s market size claims and competitive landscape. The AI drafts the initial memo, and the associate edits it, adding their human judgment and qualitative insights.

Thursday: Portfolio Monitoring & LP Updates The associate is also responsible for tracking existing portfolio companies. They use an investor portal like Juniper Square which provides a central dashboard for performance metrics.

To prepare for the quarterly Limited Partner (LP) update, they use an LLM to:

This automates the tedious data gathering, freeing the associate to focus on the strategic narrative for their investors.

Friday: Market & Thesis Refinement The cycle ends by feeding market intelligence back into the thesis. The associate uses AI to analyze trends, competitor moves, and new technology inflections. They might ask Perplexity to “Summarize the key takeaways from the last three Stratechery articles on AI infrastructure and identify the top 3 debated points.” The insights gained help refine the sourcing queries for the following Monday, creating a continuous loop of improvement.

AI Tools for Venture Capital & Private Equity

VC tools are enterprise-grade, expensive, and focused on finding and vetting private companies. They are not for individual investors.

Who should NOT use these tools? If you are a solo GP, an angel investor, or a public-markets investor, this entire category of software is overkill. The cost is prohibitive, and they are designed for the workflow of a multi-person fund. Your needs are better met by the tools in the next section.

Workflow 2: A Week in the Life of a Public-Markets Investor

This workflow is for a sophisticated individual investor or a family office analyst managing a portfolio of public stocks. Their goal is to generate ideas, conduct deep research efficiently, and manage risk. Their AI stack is about synthesis and quantitative insight.

Monday: Idea Generation & Screening The week starts with a search for new opportunities. Instead of just screening on P/E ratios, the investor uses AI to find companies with qualitative tailwinds.

Using the OpenBB Terminal, a free and open-source platform, they can run complex screens that combine fundamental data with alternative data, such as trending Reddit mentions or insider trading activity. For technical analysis, they use a TradingView screener to find stocks exhibiting specific chart patterns or indicator signals. The goal is to produce a manageable list of 5-10 stocks for deeper investigation.

For their actively managed satellite portfolio, they use AI to analyze correlations and risk. They might ask an LLM, “Given my portfolio of [TICKER1, TICKER2, …], what is my primary factor exposure (e.g., to interest rates, oil prices, tech sector)? Suggest one ETF to hedge this exposure.”

How do investors use AI?

It depends on the investor. VCs use specialized AI platforms like Harmonic for deal sourcing and Affinity for relationship intelligence, focusing on finding and vetting private companies. Retail investors primarily use general AI like ChatGPT for stock research and summarizing SEC filings, according to a 2026 Investing.com study.

Will AI replace investors?

No, but it is automating the analytical parts of the job. AI can screen thousands of companies or financial reports, but it cannot replicate the human judgment needed for final investment decisions, negotiate terms, or build trust with a founding team. It augments the investor, replacing the analyst’s spreadsheet but not the partner’s conviction.

What is the best AI for stock trading?

There is no single “best” AI. For technical analysis and charting, TradingView is the dominant platform, though its “AI” features are community-built scripts. For building and backtesting fully algorithmic strategies, QuantConnect is a professional-grade option. For fundamental research, general LLMs like Claude or Perplexity are most effective.

How do VCs use ChatGPT?

VCs use ChatGPT and similar LLMs for tasks that involve summarizing or drafting text. Common uses include summarizing pitch decks, drafting investment memos, analyzing earnings call transcripts for market intelligence, and writing first drafts of quarterly updates for their own investors (LPs). They do not use it for financial forecasting or final decisions.

Can AI predict stock prices?

No. While AI can identify patterns, correlations, and anomalies in historical data far better than humans, it cannot predict future stock prices with certainty. Markets are influenced by unpredictable human behavior and random world events. Any tool claiming to guarantee AI-powered predictions is a red flag.
