What actually separates a good transcription tool from a bad one?
Three things, in this order: how it handles accents and overlapping speakers, whether it labels who said what, and how much editing the output needs before it is usable. Raw word accuracy is the number everyone advertises and the least useful of the three.
Do the free tiers work for real use?
For occasional short recordings, usually yes. They typically cap minutes per month rather than degrading the model, so the transcript quality is the same — you simply run out. Every tool with a free tier is marked here.
Do these handle languages other than English?
Coverage varies enormously and is the single most common disappointment. Accuracy in a second language is often well below the headline figure, so check the specific language on the tool's own page rather than trusting a general claim.
Is a meeting-notes tool the same thing?
Overlapping but not identical. A transcription tool gives you the text; a meeting assistant also joins the call, summarises it and extracts actions. Several tools here do both — the difference matters mostly for how they price it.
